Why the rate depends on the grass
Seed size is destiny: Kentucky bluegrass seed is tiny (a couple million seeds per pound) so 3 lbs covers 1,000 sq ft, while tall fescue's fat seeds need 8 lbs for the same ground. Overseeding an existing lawn cuts any rate in half — you're filling gaps, not starting from dirt.

Worked example
A 5,000 sq ft new tall fescue lawn: 5 × 8 = 40 lbs of seed. Overseeding the same lawn next fall takes 20. Check the label math too — a "covers 5,000 sq ft" bag using filler and coating can contain less pure seed than the rate implies.
The part people skip
Seed-to-soil contact and moisture decide everything. Rake so seed touches dirt, then keep the top quarter-inch damp for two to three weeks — light watering once or twice daily, not occasional soakings. Cool-season grasses (fescue, bluegrass, rye) seed best in early fall; warm-season (bermuda, zoysia) in late spring.

No — heavy overseeding produces crowded, weak seedlings competing for the same water and light, and disease loves the density. Hitting the labeled rate with good soil contact beats doubling it.
