Sod is same-day perishable — ordering right matters more than with any other yard material. This adds cutting waste and converts to your farm’s pallet size.

Rough weight to move—
A pallet of sod weighs 1,500–3,000 lbs depending on moisture. It must be laid the day it arrives — heat in a stacked pallet starts cooking the grass within hours.
Ordering sod without the panic
Sod comes in ~10 sq ft rolls stacked on pallets of 400–500 sq ft (farms vary — ask). Add 5% for the cutting waste around curves, walks, and beds, and round pallets up: running out with a strip of dirt left means a second delivery fee and a visible seam of different-age grass.
order = lawn sq ft × 1.05 · pallets = order ÷ your farm's pallet coverage
Worked example
A 2,000 sq ft yard needs 2,100 sq ft — 210 rolls, about 4.7 pallets at 450 sq ft each — order five. That's also roughly 9,000 lbs of material, which is why it ships on a truck with a forklift and why you want the pallets dropped close to the work.
The same-day rule
Sod is alive and stacked sod overheats fast — in summer, rolls in the middle of a pallet can yellow within a day. Prep the soil completely before delivery, start laying immediately, stagger seams brick-style, roll it, and water the moment a section is down. Daily watering for the first two weeks makes the roots take.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are on a pallet of sod?
Usually 400 to 500 sq ft depending on the farm — 450 is a common figure. Confirm before ordering, since a 50 sq ft difference per pallet changes a big job’s count.
How much does a pallet of sod weigh?
1,500 to 3,000 lbs depending on soil moisture — freshly irrigated sod is dramatically heavier. Plan delivery placement; nobody moves a pallet of wet sod by hand twice.
How soon must sod be installed?
The day it’s delivered — same day, ideally within hours in summer heat. Stacked rolls generate heat and the grass begins to decline quickly, so complete the soil prep before the truck arrives.
